Nothing too significant except that the Junkies have posted a statement on their website.
Much like the Terminator, we'll be back. Stay tuned for a major announcement coming soon.
In the meantime, we wanted to express our appreciation to all the listeners who have supported us for years in both DC and Baltimore. We're thankful for the opportunity WHFS gave us to do a morning drive show for the last two years and the station will be missed by all of us.
Just in case you didn't know, at 10 am on Wednesday morning we were told that WHFS was flipping to Spanish music "El Zol." Because of your support, we'll land on our feet. And as soon as we can fill you in on the future of the Junkies, we'll give you the skinny. Stay tuned -- you're money!
I think Nacho's is probably correct...they are going to satellite like everyone else. I just can't think of any other local station that needs a morning show, unless they go back to nights.

I work in the radio business and it came to a shock to all of us at Bonneville (Z104, WTOP, and Classical 103.5) What it boils down to is poor ratings for WHFS. Poor ratings = zero advertising dollars. No one in their core demographic (M18-34) takes the time to fill out an arbitron survey. As a whole - the station ranked #20 in the DC Market. Now, there are advertisers that know the station and realize their is a loyal fan base - but to the national advertisers that buy advertising based on ratings, WHFS got no love. It is a smart move to shift formats to an under-served demo because they will have the chance to really own that market. Now, on the other hand - they are also owned by Infinity broadcast (publicly owned) which means they have to always be jumping through hoops for "the man." Corporate America sometimes blows and this is a prime example of it. If you want more information about the switch and people's comments, visit www.dcrtv.com - it is kind of us Radio geeks homepage for washington broadcasting gossip.

From the same site Kris posted about...lookgs like the junkies are going back to JFK.
"Speculation is that they'll be moving to middays at co-owned Infinity talker WJFK-FM, where they worked before jumping to HFS."

I guess I'm glad it wasn't just me being a crank and that things really had changed. From the Post today:
WHFS began as a classical music station, then switched to pop music in the early-to-mid-1960s before turning to rock about 1968. The moves were orchestrated by Jake Einstein, who began as an advertising salesman and became one of the station's owners in the mid-1960s.
Einstein's son, Damian, a longtime on-air personality on WHFS, said yesterday that the station's reputation as a maverick programmer began to decline more than a decade ago, at the beginning of a rapid consolidation of ownership in the industry.
"They really weren't interested in the music anymore," said Einstein, who was one of WHFS's best-known personalities and who is now the program director at WRNR-FM, a small alternative rock station in Annapolis. "There really wasn't that much creativity there. Having been there for so long and having done so many things there, of course it's sad. But I guess you gotta do what you gotta do."

That really was a great time -- the early 1990s -- to be into alternative music in this city. So much of it was HFS. I was in high school, so I had lots of free time, but there was lots of "appointment programming" I was constantly tuning in for. Unreleased songs every night and the weekly recorded concert broadcast... Good times.

Arbitron ratings are a joke. I took part in an Arbitron survey a couple months back. It's quite funny actually, they said that I would get a cash incentive, so I said bring it on. So they send me a booklet with a dollar bill and a coupon for a free frosty at Wendys, then a week later they sent another dollar saying they wanted the survey back. So I held onto it hoping to get more money. They never sent more money, and I never sent back the survey. It's a shame too, I listened to HFS alot that week. Maybe I'm the reason they got booted.
